When Life Leaves You With No Other Options: A Story of Hope

The pressures of life can make it feel as though there are no options left. Sometimes, people become so desperate that they are willing to accept any offer because they have lost hope. But when the pressures of life keep knocking on your door, you have to believe that hope is still possible and that things can turn around.

The movie The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind is an inspiring story about a brave and intelligent young boy named William who saves his village from famine. That’s the story in a nutshell, but I encourage you to watch it for yourself!

What I love about this movie, and what I wanted to share with you, is that when the pressures of life become too much to handle, it can feel—and may even literally be—that there are no options around you.

What will be the thing that keeps you going? What will be the driving force that helps you believe that your current circumstances are not all there is to life? Like the boy who builds an unconventional wind turbine, what is inside of you that could change everything?

The movie, which is based on a true story, introduces us to various characters and shows how people often fell into certain jobs or roles simply because those were the only opportunities available. Parents had to pay for their children’s schooling, and if they could not afford it, their children were often left with no choice but to work.

In this small village, job opportunities were limited, the government was corrupt and often overlooked the needs of rural communities, and the people had very little hope for a better future. Then, life gets even worse. A famine strikes, people begin dying at an alarming rate, and others flee to nearby cities in hopes of surviving. But there is one boy who has been gifted with intelligence in engineering and science.

William knows in his heart that he can do something about his circumstances.

He understands that this is no longer about building silly inventions just for fun. This time, he has the opportunity to use his knowledge and skills to help save his village. He believes that he can make a difference, even when the situation around him seems impossible.

Along the way, others begin to believe in him, but there is one person whose belief matters deeply: his father.

William’s father has his own journey throughout the movie, but I want to focus on William and the determination within him. This family and this village have lost so much. They have experienced so much hardship, and they are running out of options.

When it feels like there are no other options, two things can happen: you can give up, or you can get up and try.

William’s father eventually has to see for himself that there may be no other option but to give his son a chance. When you feel like you have nothing left to lose, what is the harm in trying? What is the harm in having hope?

Eventually, the whole village comes together to help William build his wind turbine. Through his invention, they are able to pump water to their crops. In due season, those crops grow and provide food for their families.

That wind turbine becomes more than just an invention. It becomes a sign of hope, a sign of life, and a reminder that even in the most difficult circumstances, something can change.

Like William, you may be feeling hopeless right now. It may feel as though life keeps beating you down, and no matter what you do, you cannot seem to catch a break.

But I want to ask you this: What is inside of you that could be the answer to your problems?

You may not see it right now. Others may not see it in you either. People may doubt you, question your abilities, or fail to understand what God has placed inside of you. But don’t let that stop you from believing that there is still hope.

Even when people don’t believe in you yet, continue to trust God and walk in the gifts He has given you. As you move forward in faith, hearts can change, doors can open, and people may begin to see what they could not see before.

When you have a heart to help others, a willingness to use what you have, and the faith to trust God through the process, you never know how your actions could change someone’s life. Sometimes, the very thing God has placed inside of you is the thing someone else has been waiting for.
